Whatley Manor: Where Hospitality Becomes an Art Form

There are stays that you remember for a single moment—a dish, a view, a firelit room. And then there are stays that linger because the whole place feels intentionally put together. Whatley Manor sits distinctly in the latter category.
Set within 12 acres of gardens in the heart of the Cotswolds, the house has become synonymous with intelligent hospitality: a place where comfort, craft, and clarity of purpose are quietly woven through every corner of the guest experience.
Our team recently spent time on the estate on behalf of Ten Ahead members to experience the house from arrival to departure—sleeping there, eating there, unwinding there, and meeting the people who make it all feel effortless.

A Welcome That Sets the Tone
Whatley Manor unfolds slowly, like a conversation you didn't realise you were having. The long, tree-lined drive, discreet valet and concierge, and warm reception are only the first chapter. It's how those small moments cohere that leaves a lasting impression.
Rooms and suites are individually appointed, each one a study in comfort and considered luxury. Generous in scale yet quietly designed, they strike that rare balance between elegance and ease—spaces you are genuinely happy to return to between morning walks and evening meals.
Behind the scenes, an attentive team across every touchpoint—from reception to housekeeping, spa to dining room—orchestrates service in a way that always feels personal without ever being intrusive. That collective skill is what turns a stay here into something unhurried, unforced, and deeply restorative.

The Dining Room—A Story on the Plate
If Whatley Manor's rooms feel like a comfortable home away from home, The Dining Room is its richly layered, intimate drawing room where the conversations happen.
At the heart of the culinary offering is Executive Chef Ricki Weston, whose menus reflect a deep respect for ingredient, seasonality, and provenance. Produce from the on-site kitchen garden, fermented vegetables extending seasonal use, honey from the estate's own bees, and a zero-waste ethos all feature across courses that unfold with logic and flair.
The space is deliberately crafted to feel interactive and convivial—evenings often begin in the Drawing Room with snacks and introductions before moving through to The Dining Room proper. Each course is calibrated with precision, where a dish such as delicate white Brixham crab sits alongside courses that capture childhood memory with deft technique and elevated flavour.
The wine pairing was exemplary—not simply complementary, but narrative. Alongside generously chosen vintages from vineyards known and niche, an aromatic tea pairing created in collaboration with Chef Ricki's tea sommelier partner added an unexpected but beautifully judged counterpoint to the sequence.

And because excellence here is inclusive by design rather than by exception, one of our party enjoyed a gluten-free tasting path that never felt like substitution, but rather a parallel expression of care and craft.
All-Day Ease
For more relaxed moments, Grey's Restaurant is where conviviality meets comfort. Here, small plates and global influences are presented with the same thoughtful touch as in the grander dining sequence, allowing guests to choose simplicity without sacrificing quality.
Afternoon Tea—a truly English tradition—is served in the Garden Room, Drawing Room, or terrace (weather permitting), and offers classic sandwiches, scones, and pastries alongside gleaming glassware of Gusbourne English sparkling wine.
Aquarias Spa—A Space to Reset
The Aquarias Spa feels deliberately designed to let tension melt into stillness. Thermal suites, a hydrotherapy pool, heated stone recliners, and salt scrub showers create a rhythm of ease that invites you to lean in rather than check out.
Skilled therapists guide treatments that use natural, high-quality products designed to restore both mind and body, with options that range from restorative day retreats to more bespoke experiences.
For those seeking a holistic pause, seasonal spa day retreats blend treatment time with dining in Grey's or afternoon tea, punctuating the experience with a sense of continuity rather than compartmentalisation.
Why It Resonates
Whatley Manor's appeal is not conjured through spectacle, but through coherence. Every element—from the quiet certainty of the service to the detailed dramaturgy in the kitchen, the respite of the spa to the comfort of a well-appointed room—feels calibrated to encourage presence rather than performance.
For our members, who increasingly travel with intention rather than impulse, this is precisely the kind of place that rewards a slower rhythm: purposeful without being pedantic, generous without being showy, and crafted with intelligence rather than insistence.
Just over 90 minutes from London by train to Kemble and a short countryside drive beyond, it is an escape without complication and a destination whose details add up to more than the sum of its parts.
Our profound thanks to Natalie Baxter, Sales and Events Manager, and to the wider Whatley Manor team for extending their hospitality with such warmth and precision.
