Lifestyle manager vs personal assistant: what's the difference?

A personal assistant carries out the tasks you give them. A lifestyle manager takes responsibility for whole areas of your life and runs them, so most of those tasks never reach you. A PA works from your instructions; a lifestyle manager works from knowing you. It sounds like a small distinction written down, but it changes how much of your own life you're still personally holding.

A good PA is invaluable when you have a clear list and someone to work through it: diary, inbox, travel bookings, the errands you can describe and hand over. What stays with you is the thinking. You still decide what needs doing and when, and you're still the one who spots the thing about to slip. A lifestyle manager takes that on as well. They learn how your household runs and own the outcome across travel, the home, health, schools and the admin underneath all of it, working out what's coming rather than waiting for the brief.

Which one your life needs comes down to how settled it is. If your needs are fairly steady and you mainly want an extra pair of hands, a PA is the sensible and usually cheaper option. The case for a lifestyle manager grows with the complexity: a second or third home, constant travel, a family, the feeling that you've become the bottleneck for your own week. The quickest test is to look at where your evenings go. If they vanish into admin and chasing, you've outgrown what one employed assistant can hold, and what you actually want is someone to own it rather than action it.

With Ten Ahead it's one lifestyle manager who learns your household and takes it on, with a team behind them and availability well beyond office hours. You stay the decision-maker. The day-to-day stops being yours to carry.

Common questions

Can a lifestyle manager replace my PA?

Often, yes. Plenty of clients keep a PA for work and hand us everything on the personal side.

Isn't it just an expensive PA?

You're paying for ownership and range rather than hours, and you skip the salary and HR of employing someone, so it sits closer on cost than it first looks.

Do I have to employ one?

Not with us. It's a retained service, so there's no payroll, and there's cover when someone's away.
